-          Liptauer - A spicy cheese spread served on bread

-          Brettljause – an Austrian smorgasbord / cheese platter

-          Mondseer – Austrian cheese fondue – from the town of Mondsee (sound of music)

Traditional Sweet Foods

-          Sachertorte - Created by Franz Sacher at 16, Chocolate torte, with apricot jam and dark chocolate icing

-          Krapfen - Little doughnuts, usually filled with apricot jam or custard

-          Apfelstrudel – apple strudel

-          Topfenstrudel – cheese curd called topfen

-          Mozartkugeln – chocolate balls names after the famous composer - A Marzipan centre, with pistachio and nougat and finally coated in dark chocolate

-          Ice cream - Vienna great ice cream, close behind Italy & great vegan options

-          Kaiserschmarrn - Shredded pancakes, served with jams, sweet caused, fruit compotes or even soaked in rum. Takes its name from Franz Joseph I who was very fond of the dish & usually served with fruits

-          Buchteln – like a really fluffy soft scone filled with jams, ground poppy or sweet curds, often served with powdered sugar on top, or vanilla custard.

-          Knödel: Flavorful Dumpling – fruit variety as desserts

-          Kardinalschnitte – layered dessert meringue based

-          Powidltascherl – plum jam turnovers

 

Traditional Meals

-          Weiner Schnitzel - Breaded and pan-fried veal cutlet (sometimes pork). The term “Wiener schnitzel” is trademarked

-          Schweinsbraten - Pork roast, usually served with potatoes and sauerkraut

-          Knodel - Boiled dumplings made from potatoes or bread

-          Tafelspitz - Boiled veal in beef broth, often served with minces apples and horseradish

-          Austrian Gulasch - Many variations. Spicy dish served with beef and bread dumplings as an accompaniment

-          Erdapfel Salat - Potato salad, marinated in vinegar, oil and salt & pepper

-          Vienna sausage – skinny little smokey sausages

-          Käsespätzle – Austrian mac and cheese

-          Gröstl- potato, beef or pork, butter and onions with a fried egg.

-          Erdäpfelgulasch – potato gulash – great for vegetarians

Traditional drinks

-          Schnapps –

-          Tipperl - white wine, a raspberry lemonade known as “rotes Kracherl” and water.

-          Radler – lemonade and beer

-          Spritzer – wine and soda

-          Hugo spritz - prosecco with elderflower syrup, mint leaves and ice (sometimes with lime)

-          Red bull – Austrian

-          Glühwein – wine mixed with spices

-          Almdudler – herbal lemonade – extremely popular, the logo is a national symbol

-          Jägertee – black tea mixed with rum and spiced
