Traditional Meals

-          Sausages

o   Bratwurst – pork and beef, usually grilled – classic snag

o   Currywurst – Bratwurst with curry sauce - Herta Heuwer in 1949 – tomato sauce and curry powder

o   Rostbratwurst – must be at least 6 inches long by EU Regulations!

o   Frankfurts – the traditional western hotdog

o   Weisswurst – pork and veal ‘white sausage’ (must be eaten before noon) boiled, not grilled

o   Mettwurst- cured meat sausage – german salami

o   Leberwurst – a spreadable sausage (made with livers) good with pickles & mustard on bread

o   Blutwurst – Blood Sausage

-          Sauerkraut - Sour cabbage. It’s a staple in German cuisine and is served with most meals

-          Pork knuckle –

-          Doner kebab – turkish immigrants rom the 1960s.

-          Schnitzel –

-          Käsespätzle – german mac and cheese

-          Sauerbraten – essentially a pot roast

-          Spargel – white asparagus

-          Rouladen - bacon, onions, mustard, and pickles wrapped in thinly sliced beef or veal

-          Kartoffelpuffer – potato pancakes

-          German Potato Salad – called Schwabischer Kartoffelsalat

-          Pretzel (brezel)

Desserts

-          Black Forest Cake (Schwarzwälder kirschtorte) from border of Switzerland /France/Germany

-          Berliner – german donut, without the hole, filled with jam, creams, custard

-          Streusel - Apfelstrudel

-          Bienenstich – Bee Sting cake

-          Pfeffernusse – gingerbread cookies

-          Spritzgeback – German biscuit, one side coated In chocolate

-          Zwetschgenkuchen – German plum cake topped with streusel

-          Spaghettieis – German icecream made to look like spaghetti

-          Stollen – traditional Christmas fruit cake – from Dresden
